My name is Sam and I’m currently living in Richmond, Virginia with my partner Caroline and our two cats. I bake at a local natural food market. I received my BFA in Sculpture at Virginia Commonwealth University. I’ve been concentrating on painting for the past two years and that has been my main focus post-graduation.
My portrait paintings are realistic representations of the subject. Repetition, layering, and texture are commonly shown in my work. The way I handle the paint in rough and small, dabbing strokes reveal the raw and different ways of living.
With my portraits I want to celebrate the hardships of self-acceptance. The effects of layering and repetition on a single image or subject demonstrates how unclear a situation is or how many choices a person faces throughout their experiences.
