Michael Lee (Greensboro, NC)
As a Cis-Gendered Homosexual mixed-race male, Michael Lee takes his own experience within the queer community and lets it influence his work. As a choreographer he has created Reclaiming in 2013. Reclaiming, inspired by Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues, shares the experience of being called a derogatory word with the audience. Based on a real life event, Michael uses historical context combined with personal account, and gestural movement to share a strong emotional and raw piece with the audience. Reclaiming was selected to be presented at the informal showing at American College Dance Festival of 2014. This showing held around 100 of Michael’s peers, colleagues and mentors in the dance community. Michael Lee, 24, is a Graduate Student pursuing his Master of Fine Art’s at University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He is a teaching assistant, who has worked with Joe Goode based in San Francisco and Mam-Luft in Ohio. As a dancer, he will be performing a piece by Renay Aumiller selected to perform at the Kennedy Center for the President of the United States in 2014. A native of Portland, Oregon, Michael received his Undergraduate degree at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Although his boyfriend/fiancé currently lives in San Francisco, he calls Greensboro home where he shares an apartment with his three-legged cat Brenda.
